To enter the desert is to enter a paradox.  Its vastness means that with each passing mile, a new scene unfolds.  Yet each scene is familiar, too, due to repetition–road, plains, range, canyon, sky, scrub–making the desert a renowned navigational challenge.

The sight of a desert road never fails to excite me: whether  familiar or previously unexplored.  The possibilities it presents, like the desert itself, seem endless.

Pictured here is the Old Emigrant Road which overlaps portions of the historical  Applegate Trail forged in 1864 to Oregon.  In the distance is Antelope Range. The road leads to Rosebud Canyon and the Black Rock Desert.
